Apple has long been aware of the durability flaws in traditional iPhones and has been working to improve them.
As evidence of this, the company has repeatedly considered relaxing warranty standards and pricing for display repairs.
Apple has yet to issue an official written statement, fearing that admitting the flaw could result in a loss of public trust and financial damage.
This seems to have affected the production of the new iPhone.
Apple has long chosen [Samsung Display] as its primary supplier of displays.
Last year, we added [LG] to our display supply list.
This coincides with 2019, when Apple is said to have recognized the display defect.
This is an unusual response, which is not a coincidence.
We can’t rule out the possibility of changing the main supplier to [LG] in the future.
In fact, [LG] is in charge of supplying parts for the newly announced top-of-the-line iPhone 12 Pro Max.
By putting the two companies in a competitive relationship, Apple is aiming to lower prices and improve performance.
In the future, this issue will be a threat to [Samsung Display].
Apple spends about 1.6 trillion yen a year on research and development.
This is more than three times as much as [IBM], which is the dominant force in the computer market, and is considered to be one of the best in the world.
Of course, that research and development is also focused on displays.
A development team led by CEO Tim Cook was established, and a number of patents have been granted, including folding and sliding ones.
The team succeeded in injecting nano-ceramic crystals into the glass surface of the iPhone to increase the resistance of the glass to scratches and impacts.
The team seems to have taken measures to control the type of crystal and the degree of crystallization so that the clarity of the screen glass can be maintained.
Personally, I believe that even with a special formulation method, it is difficult to maintain transparency over time because of the cloudy white nature of the ceramic itself.
No other smartphone manufacturer has adopted this process, and it would be difficult for a rival company to come up with a similar process any time soon, even if they investigated the process.
Does this uniqueness give Apple confidence in its manufacturing process?
That’s not all.
Apple announced that the double ion process used on the back glass is now used on the screen side of the iPhone 12 series.
This is indeed mind-blowing.
This allows the glass to be protected from scrapes, scratches, and daily wear.
The iPhone 12 series is highly expected to be drop, scratch and water resistant.
The water and dust resistance is IP68, which means that no dust can enter and there are no harmful problems when submerged in water.
In addition, the iPhone 12 series eliminates the 2.5D processed surface glass, and the exterior frame and glass surface are now flat.
We also introduced some innovations in the design of the body by making the edges of the cover and body at the same height.
We believe that these innovations resulted in a fourfold increase in the body’s drop resistance, making it possible to achieve the largest percentage improvement in impact resistance comparison in iPhone history.
Apple has made many improvements to the display in terms of development, manufacturing, repair and warranty.
I expect to see many more improvements and actions that will improve the user experience in the future.
This article is based on my personal impressions, feelings and opinions.
